Performance Evaluation of Stabilized Base Course using Asphalt Emulsion and Asphaltenes Derived from Alberta Oil Sands

Stabilization of the pavement base course using asphalt emulsion is one strategies that improves layer’s strength and, consequently, enhances performance. In this study, to improve performance asphalt-emulsion-stabilized course, asphaltenes derived from Alberta oil sands bitumen are added mix. Asphaltenes a byproduct deasphalting process sand and have no significant value in industry. The modified mixes prepared by adding different amounts powder form mix at ambient temperatures. Marshall stability indirect tensile mixtures evaluated contents asphaltenes. low-temperature properties selected investigated an test for high-temperature wheel-tracking conducted. results study indicate addition emulsion-stabilized significantly rutting resistance, with slight increase moisture sensitivity. However, also reveal slightly more prone cracking than unmodified ones.
